Trip Overview

The 7-Day Mardi Himal Trek is the ultimate “off-the-beaten-path” experience for those who want to stand eye-to-eye with the giants of the Annapurna range in a shorter timeframe. While other trails wind through deep valleys, Mardi Himal is a high-altitude ridge trek that keeps you perched on a narrow “spine” of the mountain. This unique geography provides a constant, 360-degree theater of the Himalayas, featuring unobstructed views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and the sacred Machhapuchhre (Fishtail).

What makes this trek a signature Verve Nepal experience is the rapid transition of landscapes. Within just a few days, you move from the terraced golden fields and stone-housed villages of the Brahmin and Gurung people into ancient, moss-draped “Cloud Forests.” As the forest thins, you emerge onto a rugged alpine ridge where the air is thin and the silence is profound. The journey culminates at the Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500m), a dramatic vantage point situated directly beneath the sheer, icy face of Machhapuchhre. This trek is designed for the modern adventurer who values mental clarity, physical efficiency, and the thrill of a steep ascent.

Itinerary

Your journey begins with an early morning departure from the vibrant streets of Kathmandu. As you head west toward Pokhara, the 200km drive unfolds like a moving postcard of the Nepalese middle hills. For 6 to 7 hours, you will trace the banks of the Trishuli and Marsyangdi rivers, famous for their turquoise waters and the white-water rafters that dot the currents. The route passes through bustling highway towns and over deep ravines, offering glimpses of terraced hillsides where local life moves at a traditional pace. As you approach Pokhara, the horizon transforms; the jagged, icy peaks of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs suddenly appear, welcoming you to the “Adventure Capital of Nepal.” Upon arrival, you’ll check into your lakeside hotel, where the reflection of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) in the still waters of Phewa Lake sets a serene tone for the trek ahead.

Your trek begins with a scenic drive from Pokhara to the traditional hilltop village of Dhampus, the starting point for your mountain ascent. Over the course of a 3 to 4-hour hike (9km), you will weave through a vibrant cultural tapestry of Brahmin, Magar, and Gurung settlements framed by golden terraced fields. As you climb the steady stone staircases, the massive, ice-covered faces of Annapurna South (7,219m) and Hiunchuli appear to rise directly out of the green foothills. The landscape eventually shifts into a cooler, moss-draped forest, leading you to the ridge-top haven of Deurali (2,100m), where you are treated to a dual panorama of the shimmering Pokhara Valley and the deep wilderness ahead.

Leaving the ridge-top vistas of Deurali behind, you plunge into a world of profound silence and ancient greenery known as the “Cloud Forest.” This 6km stretch is a meditation in motion, winding through a vibrant sanctuary of moss-covered oak, maple, and birch trees that create a cool, emerald canopy overhead. In the spring, the trail becomes a corridor of color as the rhododendrons—Nepal’s national flower—burst into shades of scarlet and pink, while the shadows often reveal glimpses of playful Langur monkeys or the vibrant Himalayan Monal. Unlike the lower villages, this 5 to 6-hour ascent is a purely natural experience, offering a quiet, inspiring path where the thin mountain air begins to sharpen your focus. By the time you reach the secluded clearing of Forest Camp (2,600m), the outside world has vanished, replaced by the raw, restorative energy of the high-altitude timberline.

As you leave the shelter of Forest Camp, the trail begins a dramatic transformation, steepening as it climbs toward the clouds. Over the course of this 4 to 5-hour (8.5km) ascent, the dense canopy of rhododendrons and oaks gradually thins out, suddenly revealing the spectacular, jagged ridgeline that gives this trek its “Sky-Walk” reputation. Emerging onto the open ridge at Low Camp and continuing toward High Camp (3,600m), you are met with an overwhelming 360-degree panorama; to your left, the deep Annapurna Base Camp valley drops away, while directly ahead, the sacred, needle-pointed summit of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) towers over the trail with staggering proximity. The air grows thin and crisp as you settle into the high-altitude zone, where the golden alpine grass glows at sunset and the mountains feel close enough to touch. This is the moment where the physical effort of the climb meets the spiritual reward of the sanctuary, providing a front-row seat to the most iconic peaks of the Himalayas.

Today is the pinnacle of your expedition, beginning in the quiet, frozen hours before dawn. The 7-hour round trip (10km) takes you along a narrow, rocky ridge as the sky transitions from deep indigo to a fiery gold. Reaching the Mardi Himal Base Camp at 4,500 meters, you will witness a sunrise that defies description, with the first light of day igniting the massive south face of Annapurna I (8,091m) and the surrounding peaks. Standing directly under the vertical, icy walls of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), you are closer to this sacred summit than on almost any other trek in Nepal. The sense of achievement is profound as you stand in the “Sanctuary of the Sky,” surrounded by a 360-degree theater of snow and rock. After absorbing the high-altitude energy and capturing your victory photos, you begin a steady descent back through the clouds to the familiar warmth of Low Camp, carrying with you the undeniable perspective of a conqueror.

Your journey downward is a 12km (7-hour) transition from the rugged alpine ridges back into the heart of the “living” hills. Leaving the thin air of Low Camp, you’ll navigate a steep, exhilarating descent through dense forests that gradually open up to reveal the stunning Gurung village of Landruk. This section offers a final, sweeping perspective of the Modi Khola valley from below, showcasing the massive scale of the mountains you just conquered. The day’s true highlight, however, awaits at Jhinu Danda. After a week of physical exertion, you will descend to the banks of the rushing Modi River to immerse yourself in natural, mineral-rich hot springs. Soaking in these riverside pools, with the sound of the glacial water passing just feet away, is the ultimate therapy for your hard-working muscles and a perfect moment to reflect on your 4,500m achievement.

The final leg of your journey is a celebratory 3 to 4-hour hike that follows the winding banks of the Modi Khola. As you descend toward Siwa, the air becomes warmer and thicker, filled with the scents of the subtropical forest and local farmland. This closing walk is the perfect time for a “victory lap,” allowing you to look back at the towering ridges of the Mardi Himal one last time. Upon reaching Siwa, you’ll trade the trail for a 2 to 3-hour scenic drive back to Pokhara. Returning to the “tourist paradise” by the lake, you can finally enjoy the modern comforts you’ve earned. Whether it’s a celebratory meal at a lakeside restaurant or a quiet moment watching the sunset over Phewa Lake, your final night is dedicated to reflecting on your incredible 4,500m achievement and the mental strength you’ve cultivated throughout the week.

FAQs

The trek is rated as Moderate. While it is shorter than the Annapurna Circuit, it features steep climbs on stone-paved stairs and narrow ridgeline trails.

The highest point is 4,500m (Mardi Himal Base Camp).

  • Risk: Moderate to Significant. Since the trek is short, the elevation gain is rapid (climbing from Pokhara at 822m to 4,500m in a few days).

  • Protocol:

  • Hydration: Drink 3–4 liters of water daily.

  • Pacing: Follow the “Climb High, Sleep Low” rule. If you feel symptoms (headache, nausea), do not ascend further.

You will stay in Teahouses (mountain lodges).

  • Lower altitudes: Often have attached bathrooms, hot showers, and decent Wi-Fi.

  • Higher altitudes: Basic twin-sharing rooms with shared bathrooms. Hot water and Wi-Fi become rare and usually come with a small extra fee ($2–$5).

You need two main documents, which Verve Nepal handles for you:

  • ACAP Permit: Annapurna Conservation Area Project

  • Machhapuchhre Rural Municipality Entry Permit (often replaces the old TIMS card in this specific corridor).

Yes. The Nepal Tourism Board now requires all trekkers in the Annapurna Conservation Area to be accompanied by a licensed guide. This is for your safety and to ensure FNMIS (Foreign Nationals Management Information System) tracking is accurate in case of emergencies.
